Stoneware: Spongeware
photograph of a spongeware bowl

Spongeware is the glaze and finish on stoneware, a heavy, thick clay container. Blue and rust colors were sponged or spattered onto the surface. They were sold as everyday dishes to farm wives. They are prized because few survived in good condition.

Spongeware bowls come in sizes 5 inches to 12 inches.

There are several designs: paneled (wide, panel-like stripes), shouldered (thick lip around the outside edge of the bowl) and cupped (thinner stripes and curved lip around the outside edge).

Popular companies are Red Wing, MN and Monnmouth Pottery (IL).
