Stoneware is a real heavy, thick clay type of container. It was designed to be used in the kitchen, home, business and farm for a variety of uses from mixing bowls to chicken waterers. In contrast, pottery is lighter in weight, more delicate and designed for decoration. |
Most stoneware was glazed by throwing common salt into the kiln. It vaporized to the surface. Cobalt colored decorations were brushed and stenciled onto the surfaces of the stoneware. A popular stoneware design is spongeware.
Complex designs and pieces for companies that made relatively few pieces are more highly valued. A lack of cracks, chips and other flaws makes a piece more valuable than those with flaws as well.
Southeastern Minnesota antique dealers carry many different types and sizes of stoneware containers due to the proximity of the Red Wing Pottery Company. Other popular companies are New York Stoneware Co., Macomb Pottery Co., and Lyons Cooperative Pottery Co.
